Hanalei is one of the most loved surf towns in Hawaii, known for its long sandy bay and mountain backdrop. The waves here work for many skill levels, which makes the area welcoming to first-timers and seasoned surfers alike. For visitors staying in our Kauai vacation rentals, Hanalei offers easy beach access and a laid-back surf culture that fits the pace of the North Shore.
Below, we break down the best surf spots in and around Hanalei, organized by experience level, so you can find the right wave for your comfort and skill.
Beginner Surf Spots on Kauai
If you’re new to surfing, Hanalei Bay has some of the friendliest places on the island to learn. The bay’s wide shape helps soften incoming swells, especially in summer. Just to
the left of the pier and is a great place for getting the feel of getting a board or boogie board into the wave. Pine Trees is also a good spot when the waves are not too big. It is super close to the Kauai beachfront vacation rentals so you can easily walk there. We also recommend that you take a lesson to increase the speed you get up and your enjoyment of the sport.
Waioli Beach Park
Waioli Beach Park sits between the Hanalei Pier and Pine Trees. It delivers playful waves when the swell is right. Conditions vary depending on tides and swell direction.
Because it’s close to town, it’s easy to check conditions and paddle out when it looks manageable. There are great beginner waves here. We recommend the Pavillion area, since there are lifeguards on duty. Waves here are mellow and forgiving, which helps new surfers practice balance and timing.

Kealia Beach
Kealia Beach faces East and has consistent waves from the prevailing winds. These are not long rides, but provide lots of practice for taking off. Lifeguards are on duty and there are trees for shade in the afternoon.
Kalapaki Beach
Kalapaki Beach is often recommended for beginners because of its gentle, rolling waves and sandy bottom. It’s protected from strong currents and has consistent conditions year-round.
Surf schools operate here daily, making it a great place to book a lesson. The nearby amenities also mean easy access to restrooms, food, and shaded areas for breaks. This beach is near Lihue, about 40 minutes away from Hanalei.
Intermediate Surf Spots
Once you’re comfortable popping up and riding green waves, Hanalei has several breaks that add more power and shape.
Pine Trees
Pine Trees is a popular local break with faster waves and more defined peaks. It works best with medium swells and offers both lefts and rights.
These spots help intermediate surfers build confidence with steeper takeoffs while still having room to maneuver.
Expert Surf Spots
Advanced surfers will find powerful, technical waves just beyond the gentler parts of the bay.
The Bowl
The Bowl is known for its fast, hollow waves and reef bottom. It breaks hard and requires strong paddling skills and wave knowledge. Two other breaks connect to this when the swell direction is just right. It provides a long, awesome ride if you know what you are doing. This is not a beginner’s spot and locals will not appreciate a floundering, though well intentioned, person who may lose their board. This could make conditions more dangerous for regulars, and inexperienced surfers may require rescuing.
This spot is best left to experienced surfers who are confident in heavier conditions.
Tunnels Beach
Tunnels Beach, also called Makua Beach, offers some of the most challenging surf on the North Shore. The waves are strong, and the reef is shallow in places.
When conditions line up, it produces long, high-quality rides. It’s also one of the most visually striking beaches, making it popular for snorkeling on calm days—one of the many things to do on Kauai’s North Shore.
