If you want a taste of old Hanalei when days were slower and a good catch fishing and the best vegetables were the talk of the town, this home will fill the order. This property has been lovingly maintained since it was built. It is our family's privilege to share Aunty Lydia's homestead with folks from around the world. Aunty Lydia's Ohana is a 3-bedroom 1.5 bath with carport. Inside you will find photos of this Hanalei family over the years. This home is only 6 houses from the beach (a very short stroll) and well located to reach all the North Shore's best beaches easily. This house is right off Kuhio Highway so you can see the surfers and North Shore life coming and going. It is about 3 blocks into "downtown" Hanalei. There is a great carport with a charcoal BBQ, eating al fresco & enjoying the mountains and waterfall views.
Aunty Lydia's Ohana is a relaxed Hawaiian style home a minute's walk from the center of Hanalei Bay & is probably one of the best values in Hanalei Beach Houses. Surrounded by tropical plants, with a grassy yard surrounding the house on 3 sides.
There is a very functional kitchen enhanced with lovingly stenciled foliage for preparing some of our farmer's market produce and fresh fish from the sea. This room has a pass through to the living room.
The wash house with a washer & dryer is just outside as well as an outside toilet room and a hot & cold shower in the yard.
The house sleeps 6. There is a king bed in the largest bedroom at the back of the house. A queen in the front bedroom and two twins in third bedroom. All bedrooms have their own air conditioners.
Hanalei is famous for its ever-changing mountains; sometimes veiled in thin mist, sometimes obscured in thick clouds, sometimes full of waterfalls, sometimes so sun drenched so that every detail stands out.
Aunty Lydia's is a great place to enjoy the mountains both from the living room windows and from the carport/lanai. Since there is plenty of room to park in front of the house in the yard, many choose this area as the eating & hang out spot. There is an outside table and chairs for al fresco meals.
Not long after our family set this house up as a vacation rental, some of Aunty Lydia's family from the mainland came to Hanalei & were tickled to be able to stay in their Aunty Lydia's house.
While being on Kuhio Highway, (highway in Hanalei meaning 1 lane in each direction with a 25-mile speed limit) the home has a beautiful hedge of tropical foliage separating you from the road. A parking area & the beginning of the yard are in front of the house.
Wai'oli Beach Park is a thin strip of park which is located between the bay front homes and the sand. There are BBQs, tables, shade trees, a bathroom and usually volleyball. This is where you encounter the bay, a minute or so from Aunty Lydia's. When you come home from the beach, there is a hot & cold outside shower to enjoy a freshwater rinse or shower under the stars.
Please be aware that when you book this house or any accommodations by the ocean in Hawaii, not on a bluff, you are booking in a tsunami evacuation zone. Evacuation instructions will be in the house and notice of the tsunami evacuation zone will be part of your contract. Also please know that we cannot accommodate charging of electric vehicles at this property.

"Positive: spacious, very comfortable beds, very well equipped kitchen, plenty of linens/towels, walk to a good beach, short drive to other better beaches, good value. Fabulous view of the mountain and its waterfalls, ever-changing and beautiful to watch. Great original mid-century decor. Cons: No comfortable outdoor space to hang out, except carport. Some road noise from the highway. Right next to an inn whose outdoor hangout was directly behind the home. There was a cottage in the back which was not rented. I did not see its existence mentioned in the original description. If it had been rented, it would have impacted our enjoyment.

House was very clean, super comfy beds, lots of extra pillows and blankets, a/c in the bedrooms but we didn’t need it much! Kitchen has everything you need, we used the BBQ and cooked almost everyday. Waking distance to lots of fun shops, restaurants, food trucks! Amazing view out of the living room windows, you can rent bikes cheap for an easy way to get around! Easy to find and easy check in, attentive management. Our stay was wonderful we fell in love and can’t wait to come back! You feel like one of the locals staying in this neighborhood by the beach. The outdoor shower was the best!!! Lots of rough surf but super fun for swimming and boogie boarding and there is a life guard so we felt safe. Just watch what the locals are doing in the water! Good family home w/ BEST north shore location
Vacation Date: November 23, 2021
"Overall, our family (husband + 2yo + grandparents) had a pleasant stay in this home. The biggest pro of the home is the location - 5 min walk to a beach in Hanalei Bay!! Beautiful beach and wasn’t very crowded. Close to many attractions - local shops, farmers market, food trucks, restaurants, and grocery stores on the north shore. The location was very convenient for us and allowed us to do all that we wanted to see without having to drive far. Other good things to note, the home was stocked with essentials in the kitchen and bathroom - totally appreciated the abundance of towels ;). Beds were comfortable and rooms were spacious. The carport was convenient for the rainy days. There were beach chairs and toys available for use that came in handy. Outdoor shower was a big plus to help us stay clean after our beach trips. The grounds were also nice enough for my kid to explore and hang out. Lastly, the view of the mountains from the living room window was a very nice bonus!! A few things to mention, it does get pretty hot during the day (11a - 3pm) in the central living room due to no window unit but we knew this from reading the reviews. We didn’t plan to be in the house during the day so didn’t think it’d be an issue but we ended up having to stay in on some days. There were plenty of fans which helped circulate some airflow and if it rained it wasn’t bad either. The house is also pretty dated but it gives the home character and brings a family environment. Check-in was seamless and I appreciated the detail provided regarding the directions to the home. Check-out requirements were minimal which was so easy on us. Our family was very satisfied with our stay!

Great price for 6 people!
Vacation Date: June 21, 2021
"Finally Made A Stay in Hanalei !
I've always wanted to stay close to Hanalei Bay, and this house provided us the opportunity at a great price for 6 people! Honestly, it reminded me of my great-grandparent's home in South Texas. We were within walking distance of Hanalei bay, about 1.5 blocks away, so we could walk to the beach at any time without difficulty. There were beach umbrellas, chairs, a boogie board and plenty of towels ! 1 Bathroom was a little bit challenging, but having an outdoor enclosed shower for washing off after a trip to the beach made a huge difference. While there was no AC in the kitchen and living room, each of the 3 rooms had a window unit which worked well in cooling during the day if needed. There were plenty of fans and windows that open to help circulate air in the morning and evening. Kitchen had what we needed for cooking and making meals. Washing machine and dryer out back in a closet (also like my great-grandparent's house) It's not a fancy hotel, but that isn't what you are paying for. And, a fancy hotel doesn't get this close to Hanalei Bay. Also, with the current state of the road closures (we were there June 21-28) that only allow traffic through between Princeville and Hanalei 3 times a day, it was awesome to not have our schedule tied to the road's opening/closing. Wouldn't mind coming back to this little house again!

A real home in Hanalei
It's not the Ritz. That's not the point. But we were a month in Kaua and this is the only time where I felt like I was staying in the home . Made me feel little bit more a part of the community and connected to Hanalei. It's a one block walk to the beach . When it's smaller out there it's a good beginning break. I took to driving my daughter a lot to the pier , which is only about five minutes away. Google said it was a 25 minute walk to downtown but it really took about 10 . The house is clean and these were the first and only sharp kitchen knives that we found during our trip. Which is to say that whomever put the kitchen together did so for people to actually cook in there. There's a lot of reviews that tells you that it gets hot in the late afternoon. It gets hot in the late afternoon. Open up all the windows and blow the fans or just spend time at the beach or outside. I didn't think it was that big of a deal. You do hear the noise from the road, but there are so few cars driving after 8 o'clock but it really doesn't matter. The property manager was lovely and responsive. I'd stay here again. Again, if you're looking for golf courses and pampered luxury this is not for you. If you're looking for proximity, convenience , and a slice of old Kauai at a great value this is a good stay.

"We had a great time in Hanalei. The house is very big and has everything we needed. It was nice having 3 bedrooms and an outdoor shower. The best part is the 1 block walk to the beach. We happily walked to town, the pier, everywhere in town. I wanted to live in Hanalei and got the chance. Unfortunately for us the house gets 0 air flow so we were hot at night, and very hot from 2-5 pm daily. We had to leave the house. One room has an air conditioner. In the room there’s a note that says don’t try to cool the whole house with this air conditioner because that’s ridiculous and when it’s hot take a shower or jump in the ocean. There are 8 floor fans that move the hot air. Many houses aren’t airconditioned but they have air flow. This house doesn’t. I think people should know this because an elderly person would be miserable. My kids were miserable at times. If the owners fixed this problem I’m sure people would pay more to be comfortable.

We didn't realize that we came during "El Nino" season so the humidity was a bit of a shock to our system. The house has an AC unit for one bedroom but it is only meant for use in that specific bedroom. If you have a hard time sleeping in humidity and heat, and require AC, I suggest researching the cooler times to go if you plan on staying here. It is a great house and it is still a great time but sleep is a challenge if your body is not used to the elements. his house had everything that we needed for a fun family experience.

"We have just returned home from our wonderful stay in Hanalei where our home base was Aunt Lydia's. It was homey and perfect in every way. We loved the photos of Aunt Lydia and also using the outside showers after our beach days. The location is superb as it is just around the corner from the best part of Hanalei Bay where all the locals hang. It was just lovely! Mahalo Kobayashi Family We will see you next time! xo

Great comfortable house in Hanalei
Vacation Date: April 2, 2018
"My family had a great time staying at Aunty Lydia's. The location is very close to everything we wanted to do - Hanalei beaches, downtown Hanalei, Haena beaches, etc. Easy walking to Pine Trees. We were very comfortable in the house, felt like home. We cooked food multiple nights, used the outdoor shower every day, and used the covered carport for drying off our swimsuits. Lots of fans in the house to keep cool at night, and one room has AC. Roosters like all over Kauai, but not as bad as our stay in Poipu - and it helps you get up to do all the activities! Suzanne and Cynthia were very pleasant and helpful. We definitely recommend staying, and would love to stay again in the future! Thanks Suzanne and Cynthia!

Charming Hanalei
Vacation Date: November 11, 2016
"We loved our time staying in Aunty Lydia's Ohana, a lovely very-well appointed and well-located former family home. It's a short walk to the beach and to the shops and restaurants in the town. Lots to do in the area: the beach, surf lessons, hiking on the Na Pali Coat, visit Limahuli Garden, mooch around the town. Hanalie is very beautiful and was the highlight of our ten days in Hawaii - our only regret was leaving, we could easilly have stayed another 3 or 4 days.

Hanalei Rest & Relaxation
Vacation Date: September 12, 2016
"My husband and I stayed at this wonderful home for two weeks. It was spacious and very close to the beach and town- easy access to everything. It was wonderful to have an outdoor shower to wash off after the beach and to have a large kitchen to cook in. We enjoyed the living room with the views of the mountains in the distance and the tropical front yard. Old hawaiian decor and a bit mid century in the living room, Also, the house is set back enough from the highway, you don't really hear too much and it is very clean. The management was very helpful when needed. The only reason I am giving this place four stars is because it was dark inside and hot- very hot & hard to cool down inside the house. I may be more partial to lighter spaces, so if you are okay with dark, then it would probably be great for you. Also, I'm not sure if we were having a bit of a heat wave, it was in the 90's, but the house held the heat. Overall, we had a nice stay.

Amazing Hanalei Ohana
Vacation Date: June 12, 2016
"We loved Auntie Lydia's. My family stayed for a week in June. 3 adults/2 kids. It was stocked with everything we needed. Clean and "old school Hawaiian" charm. Very close to town and Pine Trees beach. You are right off the main highway and in the day the traffic can be noisy, but there are hedges to keep you feeling private. Front room looks out toward the mountain and all of the water falls. The most amazing part of the house is the outside shower. It was magical standing under the warm water, in the rain, and seeing the beautiful mountain and waterfalls. The carport was great for barbecuing and visiting. It was raining quite a bit while we were there and we had friends over and ate all our dinners out there. They had a cooler, a couple of boogie boards, and beach chairs to use. Each room has fans and we were very comfortable. One of the rooms has air conditioning if you need that. Washer and dryer on site. And even though it says one bathroom, they have a little room with a toilet outside, which is convenient when traveling with kids and grandma!! We loved seeing the pics that are around the home of Auntie Lydia and her family. Hanalei is such a sweet little town and being able to stay in a home, and not a condo, was such a wonderful way to visit. Thank you for sharing your sweet Hanalei Ohana. We will defiantly be staying with you again. Aloha

A sweet slice of mid-century Hawaii in Hanalei
Vacation Date: May 17, 2016
"After searching online for an affordable rental in Hanalei, I was delighted when I found Aunty Lydia's. It's not upscale or posh, but it is a spotless, homey, roomy, and well-equipped place for a terrific stay in a convenient location. As someone who vacationed with my family in modest beach cottages on Cape Cod as a kid, the paneled walls and 50s-era ambiance evoked nostalgia. Who cares if some of the fixtures are a tiny bit worn in this misty, green, lush tropical paradise? My husband and I slept well in the back bedroom in the comfy king-size bed and didn't bother with A/C, and since we travel with a white-noise app for the iPad, road noise/rooster serenade didn’t trouble us. (Note: LOTS of plugs to charge devices.) I loved lounging in the cute bamboo-and-palm-themed living room and gazing out the double windows at the lavish vegetation and amazing mountain views (we saw two waterfalls!). An easy stroll to the beach and just a bit further to town on Weke Road (or Kuhio Hway if you don't mind no sidewalk). Our excursions included Limahuli Garden, Ke'e Beach, Mediterranean Gourmet, and Anini Beach. Just a relaxing and easy-going stay, with great service from the friendly and trusting management company. Would definitely re-book this welcoming family home if we ever return to Hanalei.

Hanalei spring break visit
Vacation Date: March 22, 2016
"We have been to Kauai several times, but had never stayed on the North shore. I found this very well priced home, read the past reviews and booked it for the first few days of our spring break. Aunty Lydia's was the perfect place to stay! The location is within a few minutes walk to a beautiful beach on Hanalei Bay. Beach chairs, boogie boards, cooler, beach mats were all provided. The house is well within walking distance to the town, but since it is located right off of Kuhio Highway, there are not any sidewalks and walking at night can be tricky. The house is one block off of Weke Road, the other main road through the area, so that is an option. The north beaches, which end at Ke'e Beach and the Kapalau Trail are within a 10 minute drive. Views from the yard are spectacular! We were not bothered at all by road noise. There was an unusual weather pattern coming through during our stay, and we had heavy rain, thunder and lightning, which caused the road into/out of Hanalei to flood and close. If it does happen, there are people who cannot get into town and therefore, some businesses may not keep regular hours because staff cannot get to work. This is something to be aware of in case you will be visiting other parts of Kauai during a trip, but it did not cause us any problems. Roosters, chickens, chicks and other wildlife, lizards, etc. are abundant all over the island, not just here. So if you are not wanting to be bothered by the crowing at all times of the day or sometimes night, or the tropical animals, Kauai may not be for you. We loved the house - funky and fully equipped, with the exception of a dishwasher or A/C, which we were aware of. Plenty of fans provided to keep things breezy. The outdoor shower with the mountain views was something we all loved and it was convenient to have for after the beach and to use to keep the inside bathroom from getting too muggy. We are already trying to plan for a return trip and will definitely stay at Aunty Lydia's again!

Aunt Lydia`s Ohana, Hanalei, Kauai
Vacation Date: February 6, 2016
"Very clean spacious home. Extremely well stocked kitchen, along with bath and beach towels which were plentiful. Beach chairs, toys, cooler. Fans in every room plus air conditioning in one room. Pretty much all you need for a good visit. Beach is about a five minute walk. I don`t really have any complaints at all. It is on the highway but the highway also ends not long after so the traffic dies after supper. This did not seem to b an issue. A short walk to town, about 10 minutes. My kids and I walked to supper most nights. Excellent grocery store about a five minute drive down the road. Overall wonderful experience.

"My daughters had trouble sleeping in due to the rooster alarms, but a very nice place for the price. The mountain view is spectacular and this is the perfect place to just chill for a while. Well located except for being right on the main road. Not fancy but good family hang out. Could use a new supply of sheets and towels.

Okay home, great location
Vacation Date: November 1, 2014
"We stayed at this home for 6 nights in November. We loved the Hanalei area and the home was very close to the beach, which was so convenient. The home could use some upgrading though, and for that reason we would not stay here in the future. Some things that could use an update are the coffee maker (need larger size), the kitchen really needs a dishwasher (with new people staying each week, it would be nice to properly sanitize the dishes), and an A/C (we were sweating all day and night, and we visited during a cooler season, I couldn't imagine if we would have gone during summer!). I know everyone says Hawaii has such perfect weather that no one in their right mind needs A/C, we that simply isn't true. It would not cost much for the owner to put in an A/C system for the comfort of the guests. Good things though were location on the island, close to the beach, outdoor shower was a nice feature.

"I cannot say enough about Aunty Lydia's. The location is unbelievably close to the beach-also walking distance to town and market on Saturdays. The front yard has awesome view of waterfalls-- we saw 6 one day! We were a bit surprised that the neighbors share a lot but they were sooo nice and unobtrusive. All the beach stuff you need! Loved having the chairs. We love cooking, so if you do too, bring any spices and what not bc there was only S & P there. I will definitely stay again. And again! Feels like home the minute you walk through the door.

excellent if you have clear expectations as to what you are renting
Vacation Date: April 13, 2013
"This is our second stay at Aunt Lydia's. We are on a budget when traveling and Aunt Lydia's fits the bill. Possibly the least expensive rental for it's size and even for two bedroom units. It is on the highway but traffic is minimal and you are still two blocks from the beach. Nice yard for the kids to run around and plenty of room to have friends over for dinner, etc. Great views up at the mountains. We are out and about when in Hanalei so we don't put a huge premium on our rental being luxurious. That said, Lydia's has everything we need.
